Upholding my UNimportance

September 12, 2010

I’m going to admit three not-so-pretty things I noticed about myself last week.

  1. I take ME too seriously.
  2. It’s not helpful or necessary.
  3. I know I will struggle to change.

When I care about something, I put my whole heart into it. This is true for all endeavors, personal and professional. As I grow older, I’m able to be more mindful, if only in retrospect sometimes. Noticing these three tendencies has allowed me to let go a little. “She Let Go” was a nice find. Actually it found me vs. me finding it. Isn’t it interesting how life works that way? Here is another:

Most of our energy goes into upholding our importance. If we were capable of losing some of that importance, two extraordinary things would happen to us. One, we would free our energy from trying to maintain the illusory idea of our grandeur; and two, we would provide ourselves with enough energy to catch a glimpse of the actual grandeur of the universe.

~Carlos Casteneda

This blog has primarily been about me. Am I really that important? Not. At. All. But blogging has helped me sort through a lot of stuff. In processing this stuff I’ve noticed that I feel drawn to share things that inspire me in the hopes of inspiring others, hence the recent quotes and poems. Reading another person’s words transports me out of “me-me-thinking-mind” and into a different space.

With the recent career division of writing more than teaching, I’ve found myself writing mostly about topics that have nothing to do with me. I LOVE this but must find a balance again with the importance issue. (I’m nervous about people criticizing my writing.) So that I can draw inspiration and have a place to draft written work, I created a new website, namaste*hOMe. There I intend to write mostly privately and to share inspiration related to my new employment (home interior/furniture/design). Drop me a comment and let me know what you think.

One final thought . . . when I write about finding *balance* like I did a few posts back know the finding is more fleeting than permanent. I’m a work in process always and I am thankful for the journey always.

She Let Go

September 7, 2010

This was sent via email today in a newsletter from my lovely teacher of IYT Teacher Training.  Powerful.  Enjoy.

She Let Go

She let go. Without a thought or a word, she let go.

She let go of the fear. She let go of the judgments.

She let go of the confluence of opinions swarming around her head.

She let go of the committee of indecision within her.

She let go of all the ‘right’ reasons. Wholly and completely, without hesitation or worry, she just let go.

She didn’t ask anyone for advice.

She didn’t read a book on how to let go.

She didn’t search the scriptures.

She just let go.

She let go of all of the memories that held her back.

She let go of all of the anxiety that kept her from moving forward.

She let go of the planning and all of the calculations about how to do it just right.

She didn’t promise to let go. She didn’t journal about it.

She didn’t write the projected date in her Day-Timer.

She made no public announcement and put no ad in the paper.

She didn’t check the weather report or read her daily horoscope.

She just let go.

She didn’t analyze whether she should let go. She didn’t call her friends to discuss the matter.

She didn’t do a five-step Spiritual Mind Treatment. She didn’t call the prayer line.

She didn’t utter one word.

She just let go.

No one was around when it happened.

There was no applause or congratulations. No one thanked her or praised her.

No one noticed a thing.

Like a leaf falling from a tree, she just let go.

There was no effort. There was no struggle.

It wasn’t good and it wasn’t bad. It was what it was, and it is just that.

In the space of letting go, she let it all be.

A small smile came over her face.

A light breeze blew through her.

And the sun and the moon shone forevermore.

Prenatal Yoga

So, as promised to my fellow yogi-friends, I thought I would do a quick post on Prenatal Yoga.  As you all know, I took a prenatal intensive in Asheville, North Carolina last weekend.  Since I’m not a doctor and don’t pretend to be, I don’t want to go too in-depth, but I thought I’d post some generals about practicing yoga while pregnant.  Here goes:

  1. For pregnant women who already have an established practice, it is perfectly fine to continue practicing as normal while listening to the body.   It is advised, however, to begin a more gentle practice during pregnancy as the body changes rapidly and some poses are contraindicated during the 2nd and/or 3rd trimesters.
  2. Lying on the belly becomes contraindicated as the baby grows.
  3. Forward Bends should be done with a straight spine as opposed to a curved one, especially further along in the pregnancy . . . which could help with lower back pain in the long run.
  4. Practice strong backbends with care.  Pregnant women secret a homone called Relaxin which could cause overstretching.  Imagine . . . the belly expands enough to make room for baby. . . do you want to overstretch and end up with (possibly more) stretch marks after the baby is born?
  5. Twist only gently and never in the lower belly.  Focus the twist in the upper chest instead.
  6. No jumping in vinyasas.
  7. 8 to 15 % of pregnant women can have Vena Cava Compression, so its a good idea to NOT lie flat on the back in Savasana.  Prop at a 45 degree angle with a block and bolster.  Also roll over to the left side instead of the right after Savasana.
  8. Be mindful in or avoid Inversions.

So, those are just a few Prenatal Yoga tips.  Consult a physician or yoga teacher trained in prenatal yoga if you are interested in beginning a yoga practice during pregnancy.

Here is a beautiful poem that was on the bottom of my Prenatal Yoga Training Intro Letter:

A Precious Human Life

Everyday think as you wake up

Today I am fortunate to have woken up

I am alive

I have a precious human life

I am not going to waste it, I am going to use

All my energies to develop myself

To expand my heart out to others

To achieve enlightenment for

The benefit of all beings

I am going to have kind thoughts toward others

I am not going to get angry

Or think badly about others

I am going to benefit others as much as I can

Next topic . . .  Facebook

So, I noticed a few other blogger friends (who are also friends of mine on Facebook) belong to a site called Networked Blogs.  I registered this blog but cannot quite determine how it works.  If you know, please message me, and by all means follow my blog there.  Click on the link in my side bar (to the right) just below Email Subscription and above RSS Feeds.

Recently I created a new page on my blog called Quotes.  Here, I plan to post favorite quotes.  I already posted a few but would like to continue to post as time goes on.  I use quotes often for personal inspiration and in my yoga classes.  In the past I made “quote cards” for friends and plan to begin to do so again.  I will be posting pictures of these quote cards, probably on another page as time goes on.  If you have a favorite quote, please feel free to post it in the comments section on the quotes page or in any other way you see fit.

Last but not least, I write for Examiner.com.  I am the Green Living Examiner, but have not written in quite a while as life has stretched me into so many other directions.  I will be writing more regularly beginning in the next few weeks.  So, if there are certain green topics of interest to you, please let me know.  I love to research and write and your help will be greatly appreciated!

As always, I hope you are enjoying this fabulous Thursday.  The day was absolutely gorgeous here in Ohio!
